  • Skillet
  • Whisk
  • Mixing bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground breakfast sausage
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Associated Ingredients:

  • Fresh fruit (optional, for serving)
  • Scrambled eggs (optional, for a complete breakfast experience)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Cook the Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Remove any excess grease.
  • Make the Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage and stir until the flour is fully incorporated. Cook for 1-2 minutes, allowing the flour to cook slightly. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.
  • Prepare the Biscuits: Cut each biscuit into quarters.
  • Assemble the Casserole: Pour the sausage gravy into the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Place the quartered biscuit pieces evenly over the gravy.
  • Drizzle with Butter: Drizzle the melted butter over the biscuit layer.
  • Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
  • Rest and Serve: Allow the casserole to rest for about 5 minutes before serving.
