Equipment

  • Large skillet or pot with a lid
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) bowtie pasta
  • 1 lb (450g) Italian sausage casings removed
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Sauté Sausage: In a large skillet or pot over medium heat, cook the Italian sausage until browned and cooked through. Break it into crumbles using a wooden spoon.
  • Add Aromatics: Add chopped onions and minced garlic to the sausage, sautéing until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
  • Add Broccoli and Pasta: Toss in the broccoli florets and bowtie pasta. Mix well to combine with the sausage and aromatics.
  • Pour in Tomatoes and Broth: Add the diced tomatoes (with their juice) and pour in the chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover the pot and let it cook for about 15 minutes or until the pasta is al dente.
  • Stir in Cream and Cheese: Pour in the heavy cream and sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the pasta. Stir until the cheese is melted, and the sauce is creamy. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Garnish and Serve: Remove the pot from heat, and let it rest for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  1. Customize the dish by adding red pepper flakes for a spicy kick or extra vegetables like bell peppers or spinach.
  2. Use whole wheat or gluten-free pasta for a healthier option.
  3. Make sure to keep an eye on the liquid levels during cooking. If needed, add more broth to achieve the desired consistency.
  4. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat on the stovetop with a splash of broth to maintain the creaminess.
