Eggs are often called nature’s perfect food, and for good reason! They’re versatile and packed with nutrients. Whether you like them boiled, fried, scrambled, or poached, eggs are an affordable and protein-packed choice.
What keeps eggs fresh for so long? It’s all thanks to their protective shells. These shells are like shields, made mostly of calcium carbonate. And underneath, there’s an even stronger layer that keeps out harmful bacteria, making sure your eggs stay fresh for a surprisingly long time.
How Long Do Eggs Last?
So, how long can you keep eggs in the fridge? If they’re still in their shells, whole eggs last about a month. But if you’ve cracked them open, raw yolks and whites stick around for up to four days. Hard-boiled eggs? They stay good for three to four days. The FDA says you’ve got a week for hard-boiled eggs.
Not sure if an egg is still good? Trust your senses. If it smells weird or looks strange, it’s time to say goodbye. If you’re unsure, do the float test – it’s an easy way to check if your eggs are still fresh.
To keep your eggs at their best, store them in the coldest part of your fridge – usually the back or bottom shelf. The ideal temperature is around 40°F. Don’t put them in the fridge door, though! It gets warmer there every time you open the fridge, and we want to keep our eggs cool.
Eggs can absorb smells from strong foods, like onions. To keep them smelling fresh, store your eggs in their carton and keep smelly foods in a separate airtight container.
Whether they’re from the store or your backyard, never use eggs with cracked shells. It’s a safety thing. Even though store-bought eggs are pre washed, if your backyard eggs are dirty, make sure to wash them properly.
By following these simple tips, you can make the most of your eggs – ensuring they’re not only tasty but also safe to eat!
